Collar or harness: which is better for our 4 -legged friends?
Everything you need to know to choose the safest option for a walk with your Pet
Walking with Fido: collar or harness?
The daily walk is one of the best moments to spend with our furry friends.
All you need is the right accessory!
Collar or harness? There is no valid choice for all our four-legged friends.
The collar has the advantage of being easy to put on and allowing good direct communication between you and your furry friend. The harness, on the other hand, is a slinging that gently wraps the dog from the neck to the chest, up to the paws. Before buying one or the other, we must always consider the size of our dog age, character, any pathologies and physical characteristics that could be compromised by a wrong choice.
Vanity Pet is here for this: to help you choose the best accessory for your 4-legged friend!
Collar and leash: a means of communication
The leash is not only a means to take our furry for a walk, but above all a way to communicate with him. Did not you know? Well yes, through this accessory we can build a relationship based on respect and trust with our four-legged friends.
A collar is always a great choice when you need to have a full control of your friend and greater safety. It is particularly suitable for dogs of a certain weight or that tend to “pull” a lot during walks.
This accessory undoubtedly has the advantage of being very practical to insert, it can always remain around our 4-legged friend’s neck even when we return home and, if equipped with a tag, it’s very useful in case of loss. it is to be avoided, however, if your dog has respiratory problems and for brachycephalic breeds.
It’s essential to choose the right size, so that it is neither too loose nor too tight, with at least two fingers of space between the collar and his neck.
If you choose the collar, our advice is to choose a fixed and not-extensible leash because it allows full control on any occasion, preferably in leather.
Harness yes, but which one to choose?
The harness must be made of a good quality material in order to avoid any skin problems for our 4-legged friend and not to cause him excessive discomfort once worn.
Choose a soft model made with natural materials, easily removable and absolutely comfortable. Among the different models, the best ones are undoubtedly the leather harnesses.
The harness has many advantages:
- Ideal for small breed dogs that have underveloped muscles, especially for dachshunds brachycephalic dogs such as pugs;
- Reduces stress on the neck and back by shifting the weight in traction to the chest;
- leaving the neck free, it facilitates communication with other dogs.
The harness is generally recommended for puppies less than 5 or 6 months old, as it is more suitable for getting them used to walking alongside us and is more difficult to slip off than the leash. Suitable for small furry pets, it also highly recommended for older dogs with movement and walking difficulties.
Wear them gradually
So how to choose? Our advice is to opt for the model that best suits ours and its needs, the most comfortable and the one with which we could feel better especially in moments such as crossing dangerous roads, hiking or socializing with other furry friends.
Our 4-legged friends are unique beings! Often they are the ones who make us understand their preferences, you just need to listen to them. Whatever your choice, rememeber that your furry friend will have to get used to it gradually. Respect his times, without forcing him. You can hel yourself with tasty treats and cuddles when he shows interest in one or the other accessory or when he wears the collar or harness even just for a short time at home.
